It’s a great time for Nightingale, Spoonbill, Ring Ouzel and Grasshopper Warbler, and has in the past produced rare or uncommon species like Hoopoe, Wryneck, Woodchat Shrike, Alpine Swift, Red-rumped Swallow, Black Kite, Citrine Wagtail, Purple Heron, Temminck’s Stint and many more!
This will be a great introduction to Norfolk birding or, for the seasoned traveller, a fantastic year-list booster and chance for one or two rarities!

ITINERARY
DAY ONE: Meet at Briarfields Hotel at 3pm, then head to the nearby reserve. The freshmarsh is buzzing with breeding birds such as Avocets and Med Gulls, while passage waders drop in – we look for species such as Wood Sandpiper and Temminck’s Stint.
DAY TWO: We’ll explore the coast around Burnham Overy and Holkham. Migrants can include Greenland Wheatear, Redstart, Whinchat and Willow Warblers. Great White Egrets and Spoonbills breed, and Cattle Egret can be found. After lunch we may explore North Point Pools at Wells, which has hosted Black-winged Stilt and Lesser Yellowlegs. We’ll check fields at Choseley for Dotterel (annual here), Yellowhammer, Corn Bunting and Grey Partridge.
DAY THREE: We head south for a full day exploring the Breckland region. This area brings a new suite of birds, including Stone-curlew. Nightingales belt out their songs, and Lesser Whitethroat, Garden Warbler and the purring of the Turtle Dove might also be enjoyed. At Lakenheath reserve we will try to see one of many Bitterns that breed. Crane is also possible and there will be plenty of Cuckoos and Hobbies. After lunch we look for forest and heathland passerines, notably Tree Pipit, Wood Lark and Firecrest. A Goshawk might even cruise over!
DAY FOUR: To East Norfolk, and The Broads. Central to them is the Norfolk Wildlife Trust reserve at Hickling. In the past three years, the newly created wetlands at Brendan’s Marsh have attracted White-tailed Lapwing, Caspian Tern, Pacific Golden Plover, numerous Black-winged Stilts and Collared Pratincole! We will take a specially arranged boat trip onto the Broad, then climb the tree tower which gives spectacular views across The Broads – look out for Hobby at eye level!
DAY FIVE: Back on the Norfolk coast, near Cley. We will see flocks of Black-tailed Godwits, attaining summer finery, plus Ruff, with passing males sporting their full regalia! Parties of spring Yellow Wagtails often include the more unusual races. Up on the heath, we have a chance of Dartford Warbler. Wood Lark, Yellowhammer and Turtle Dove. We return to base around 3pm, to allow for the onward journey home.
INCLUDED: Four nights of en suite accommodation at Briarfields Hotel, meals from dinner on day one to lunch on day five, transport, services of leaders, boat trip and reserve entrance fees
Pick-up from King’s Lynn, at 1pm on day one, and drop off around 4pm on day five.
NOT INCLUDED: Transport to/from Norfolk and any additional overnight stay that might be required, drinks and any items of a purely personal nature.
