Hula festival highlights flyway

Sunday sees the start of the Hula Valley International Bird Festival, in northern Israel, highlighting the area’s importance as part of one of the world’s great migration routes.

The Hula Valley is one of the most important stopover and wintering sites for southbound migrants through the Great Rift Valley, with the KKL Agamon-Hula Park and Hula Nature Reserve playing host to thousands of wintering Cranes, pelicans, wildfowl, waders and passerines every year.

Over 300 species are seen annually, including some of the rarest European raptors, among them Great Spotted and Eastern Imperial Eagles, Pallid Harrier, Long-legged Buzzard. All of them winter in the valley.

From November 20th to 27th, birdwatchers from all over the world will gather to enjoy birding tours, photography seminars, a major scientific conference and much more.

Bird Watching’s Matt Merritt will be blogging from the Festival at this site every day next week, with sightings reports, interviews and more.
